History
of Stanici
The
old village of Stanici is situated about 300 meters from the Adriatic
sea. It's a small village with only a dozen of old stone houses.
Old inhabitants of Stanici formerly were fisherman's, and less
farmers because they had just a little of agricultural land. First
inhabitants of Stanici came to this location before eight generations
from village Zvecanje in middle Poljica. Legend tells that there
was a father with three sons, one son came to the island Brac,
the other to Omis City and third to today's Stanici. From three
Stanic families today the biggest lives in the place of Stanici.
Village of Stanici is (and always was) part of district Omis.
After
1962. when Adriatic highway was build inhabitants of old village
Stanici have moved closer to the sea coast because of growing
tourism. The new settlement Stanici is built just by the sea coast,
on long pebble beach, in bay known as Velika luka (meaning Long
bay).
Stanici
today, because of beautiful, long, natural pebble beach, crystal
clean sea and kind hosts is famous turistic place in Central Dalmatia.
History
of Omis
Omis
is founded on left side of river Cetina, beneath steep hill-side
of Omis Dinara. Omis is sourrounded with river Cetina in southwest
and with sea in south and southeast side. So Omis is naturaly
well protected and that is why it was easy to defend Omis in past,
and also that is the reason why today Omis (located in triangle
of mountain, river and sea) is unique pearl of Croatian coast.
Omis was buildt as down town of fortress Starigrad (Fortica) that
was buildt on top of the hill beneath Omis. Because of constant
danger from land and from the sea Omis was in middle ages surrounded
with city walls. On the east (land) side the city walls were strengthen
with towers and on the northwest side with tower Peovica (Mirabella).
City walls that were protecting Omis were removed in 19th century,
but even today there are remains of them: east city gate and east
tower Turjun. West city gate of Omis are removed in 1862.
During the history Omis was known as Oneum, Onaeum, Olmissium,
Almissium, Almivssium, Almyssium, and during the domanation of
Venice Omis was known as Almissa. Scientists belive that the origin
of name Omis is Slavs word holm (hum), meaning hill, place on
hill, or historic city of Oneum was named after river Cetina that
was known (in time of Greek settlers) as Nestos.
In
Middle age Omis was important pirate port in Adriatic sea. Pirates
in Omis had light but fast ships and thay also had naturaly well
protected port in canyon of river Cetina. Omis was especialy strong
in the time when dukes Kacic ruled and other cities in Adriatic
must to pay for free sailing. After Kacic, dukes Šubić were lords
of Omis, Horvat brothers that were under the protection of Bosnian
king Tvrtko I, and after them Bosnian duke Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić,
then Banus Ivaniš Velipić and Stjepan Kosaca.
In 1409. Ladislav Napuljski sold Dalmatia to Venice, and Omis
also in 1444. godine fall under rule of Venice.
After
the Venice fall down, Omis is under Austria to 1805. and after
that from 1805 - 1813. under France. After Napoleon fall, Omis
and whole Dalmatia is occupied by Austria and that lasted to First
world war.
